View this post on Instagram HELLO!: A COUNTING BOOK OF KINDNESS by Hollis Kurman and Barroux // A poignant review at this time in the U.K. I will refer to as The Great Distraction, this book explores what it is like to be refugee child through the medium of number. As I read on @chooselove this week, this is not a โmigrant crisisโ but a crisis of empathy. This gorgeous book counts down from 10-1 exploring some of the things a refugee child who is fleeing uncertainty and danger may encounter in a simple and beautiful and hopeful way; a hot meal, a new school, a gift of clothes or toys. A great way to start a conversation with children about what a refugee is and to explore, with accompanying conversation, how to understand something they may have seen or heard about, equipping them with the skills to develop the empathy that is so desperately needed in these conversations. 10% of author royalties of this book will be donated to @amnestyuk [For transparency, this book was sent to me in exchange for review by the publisher but I have made a donation to Help Refugees in light of this.] #acountingbookofkindness #picturebookreview #picturebookaday #raisingreaders #kidsbookstagram #picturebookblogger #emotionalliteracy #kidlit #picturebooksofinstagram #weneeddiversebooks #representationmatters #picturebooklovers @otterbarrybooks A post shared by Sharing The Shelf (@sharing.the.shelf) on Aug 23, 2020 at 3:09am PDT
